Santiaguito Volcano
Patrocinio Reserve, 9 km south of the volcano Santiaguito, has a view point which offers impressive views under good weather conditions. Santiaguito Volcano, a secondary cone of Santa Maria Volcano, was created during a major eruption in 1902. The surrounding area was covered by thick layers of ashes. Today, Santiaguito is one of the active volcanoes in Guatemala. Eruptions of smoke, ashes and lava occur constantly. The National Institute for Sismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) maintains a sismologic monitoring station at Patrocinio Reserve.
